Gerstner, Lou - IBM

"We are constantly challenging what we do -
building a culture of restless self-renewal"

From Now On, We Will Only Look Outside

1) I think what happened to us relates to many large enterprises today. I call it the 'success syndrome'.

2) We measured IBM against internal measures. We had built an internal structure that dictated behavior that had worked in past. This was powerfully successful for a while, but when the industry and customeJ needs shifted, our bureaucracy kept old behavior patterns in place despite the fact that they no longer had any connection to the marketplace.

3) My belief is that all large, successful companies run the risk of trying to codify their succescess.
